WHO DO YOU SERVE?

The age-old question for all seekers of divine wisdom is “Will you serve God or the World? God or Money?”

Spiritual teachings have charged us to be aware that we cannot serve two masters. And when we try to do so, we create chaos and difficulties. So the question for us individually is “Who do I serve?” Not, who do I “think” I serve, not who do I “intend” to serve, but who am I really serving?

The inherent difficulty is that we are both human and divine. Since our natural inclination is to do whatever circumstances appear to require in any given environment, generally we default to the Ego perspective serving our survival needs first. If we are diligent, we can learn to discern the guidance of Spirit as to what to do and when instead of using the limited guidance from the Ego.

Acting on the promptings of the Ego is our habitual way of Being, called “survival”. Our humanity, like all other creatures on Earth, is set up to survive – survive the difficulties of geography, climate, predators in addition to the physical demands for food, shelter and clothing. In our sophisticated culture our survival needs are satisfied by our financial abilities. As free will Beings, we elevate desires for the latest cultural innovations in entertainment and technology to the level of survival needs when they really are not necessary for our existence. We follow the Ego’s voice to meet whatever we have designated, perhaps fantasizing, as survival needs. Our ability to hear the Ego promptings is usually clear and strong, empowering us to rationalize whatever choices we make in creating our life.

When we are actually able to hear “the still, small voice of God,” and commit ourselves to adhere to the Voice of God, we are required to teach the Ego how to surrender its’ lifelong authority and responsibility over our physical existence to the unfamiliar Voice of God. Removing our reliance on Ego and learning to trust the promptings of our God-Self is not a quick and easy process. We are teaching our Ego to become subservient to God, which appears to be a demotion. And so, difficulties arise as our faith wavers, as we think we hear God’s Voice but realize it’s probably the Ego.

Unconscious battle lines are drawn as the Ego considers that its’ power is being usurped by an unknown force. The Ego perceives this unknown to be a threat to our survival as humans. We draw lines of responsibility between the Ego and God attempting to control the chaos, to establish balance. But, we actually create more chaos, bouncing between the demands of Ego and the reality of God’s guidance. We realize we are trying to serve two masters.

Although Ego has been master of our humanity, the truth is that  God is master of our Whole - Divinity and Humanity. We must choose the God-Self if we are to continue to evolve in consciousness.

But, how? We must teach the Ego to surrender completely to our God-Self and to become the Executor of the Will of God!

“Why?” the Ego asks. The answer lies in the higher, broader, omnipotent, omnipresent perspective that our God-Self provides. From the perspective of the God-Self we are able to make better choices in our human existence and choice to live a life of “the greatest degree of love.”
